Bipolar and Depression - Cause or Effect?

yellow

I grew up with a relative who was diagnosed as depressed in her late teens, then subsequently diagnosed as bipolar/manic depressive.   She spent more than 20 years under the care and treatment of a distinguished psychiatrist.

I watched her become a mother, and watched her being cared for by her own mother as she struggled with motherhood.  I saw her isolate herself from friends and family and eventually influence her husband to do the same.  I witnessed the irrationality of her situation, her cries for help and then her pushing away when help was not wanted.   I saw the self-obsession that someone has when they desperately seek normality and struggle to keep it.

I remember not so long ago sitting with her and asking “Can you remember how this started?”  She said “I distinctly remember seeing an evil face through my bedroom window when I was about ten or eleven.  I was so scared.  I can see it now.”

Now, an old lady, she remains isolated, probably lonely.  I’m left feeling sad and still wanting to help, and realising that may never happen.

As a behavioural coach, I work mainly with elite performers in commerce and other arenas.

I’m also asked to work with people who are diagnosed as bipolar or depressed.  Because I’m neither a psychiatrist nor psychologist, and won’t suggest medication of any type, I’m often asked to help when all else has failed.

As result of my early work in training covert operators in law-enforcement, I had designed a program for improving Attitudinal Competence – we realised that an operator’s safety and success depended more on attitude than anything else, so I designed the training for that skill.

I’ve since made my vocation helping others to acquire Attitudinal Competence for life and career success and high performance.

What I’ve discovered is this: Book Title

  • habits of mind are self-made, even unintentionally, and can be both very positive and very negative.
  • When triggered by a thought or a situation, then the habit of mind kicks in.
  • Depression, bipolar and even post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms can actually be caused by this habit of mind.
  • They can be symptoms, not causes.
  • We need to distinguish between causes and symptoms.
  • We can learn skills that prevent symptoms and eliminate causes, by replacing them with what works.

When a series of negative thoughts are running, the brain produces chemicals to deal with the thoughts, which to the sub-conscious mind are not thoughts but reality.  Those chemicals are essentially adrenalin and cortisol – the hallmarks of stress and then depression.

However, when there are also episodes of thoughts of a very positive nature in the same person who also experiences the negative, the chemicals associated with positivity are endorphins, and the person is genuinely positive during that time – leading to the diagnosis of bipolar!

When I work with people who come as depressed or bipolar or suffering PTSD, I coach and train them to apply the skills of Attitudinal Competence.

In all cases there is some improvement.   In most cases there is a reduction in medication and longer periods of being effective and functional.  In most cases the person is able to recognise the onset of symptoms and take the action necessary to halt the negativity in its tracks.

Combined with healthy eating and sensible exercise, the person who applies Attitudinal Competence is best able to prevent the symptoms from occurring and can live as they wish to.

Ideally, the person attends a two day workshop, then has three or four follow-up coaching sessions to help embed the skills.  Consistent correct practice ensures mastery and best results.

Some people can help themselves easily without, simply by working through the Attitudinal Competence workbook on their own.

There are some people who are definitely clinically depressed and bipolar and do need proper medical and psychiatric attention.   However they also will benefit from the skills of Attitudinal Competence.

I suggest that if you are wishing to access the benefits of Attitudinal Competence, either for high life and career performance, or to improve depression bipolar and PTSD symptoms, then why not work through the Attitudinal Competence workbook on your own first and see what the potential might be.

You can purchase it here on this page safely easily and then download it now.

Let me know how you go, and if you wish, I’m willing to help you embed the skills of Attitudinal Competence.

Best wishes,

David Deane-Spread
